Father Damien de Veuster (1840-1889), a Belgian missionary, came to Molokai in 1873 to assist and care for leprosy patients exiled to Kalaupapa Peninsula. He eventually contracted and died of leprosy himself. This image shows his gravesite in St. Philomena Catholic church at Kalawao on the north shore of Molokai, just east of Kalaupapa.
