Abstract
Nijo-jo Palace, Kyoto. This building has "nightingale" (squeaky) verandah floors to alert residents to intruders, and is thought to have been the residence of Prince Genji of Murasaki Shikibu's novel The Tale of Genji,written in the early years of the 11th century.
