Abstract

Puuhonua O Honaunau (City of Refuge), Honaunau Bay, Kona. Ancient laws of Hawaiian society and culture were very strict. The penalty for breaking a kapu (taboo) was death, but if a transgressor could reach a puuhonua (refuge) he or she could be absolved by a kahuna (priest) in a purification ceremony and return home forgiven. The Puuhonu O Honaunau on the Big Island of Hawaii is the most famous and best preserved of the Hawaiian places of Refuge. Now a major tourist attraction.
