Abstract

The Ala Wai Canal at the western entrance to Waikiki was constructed in 1922. Prior to the completion of the canal, the southeastern coast of Oahu was a swampland of fish and duck ponds. While Waikiki has very little rainfall (around 10'' per year,) the canal drains up to 150 inches of annual rainwater that falls in the mountains to the north-east of Waikiki. This image shows Ala Moana Beach, Ala Moana boat harbour, Ala Wai canal and the western end of Waikiki.
