Abstract

Kalaupapa Peninsula at the base of the 1600-foot high sea cliffs on the north coast of Molokai was from 1866 the site of total isolation for victims of Hansen's Disease (leprosy). It has been a national park since 1980. This image shows Awahua bay where victims of Hansen's disease were dropped off in exile and the small settlement and hospital of Kalaupapa where a small community of residents still chooses to live.
