Abstract

View of Haleakala crater from the beginning of the cross-crater trail at the summit. Haleakala (lit. House of the Sun) volcano dominates East Maui. This volcano is 750,000 years old and is considered to be still active, having last erupted in 1790. The summit is 10,023 feet (3,600 meters) in elevation and the crater is 3,000 ft deep containing many cinder cones .
