Abstract
The Iao Needle (Kukaemoku) is a natural basaltic rock pinnacle on the Iao stream, surrounded by the walls of the Puu Kukui Crater, in West Maui. It is the site of one of the most famous battles in Hawaiian history when Kamehameha I defeated the Maui army, thereby succeeding to unite under his control all of the Hawaiian lslands.
