Abstract

Close-up view of silversword plants (ahinahina - Argyroxiphium sandwicense ssp.sandwicense) adjacent to the carpark at the summit road of Haleakala volcano, East Maui. This species is endemic to the high alpine zones of the Hawaiian volcanoes, Haleakala on Maui, and Mauna Loa and Mauna kea on the island of Hawaii. Silverswords produce a flower up to 8ft tall only once after growing for between 7-20 years. After flowering the plant dies. This image shows one plant that has already flowered and some young plants.
