Abstract
Remains of heiau (Hawaiian temple), above Kihei, central south coast, Maui. Heiaus were constructed of lava rock, in auspicious sites, often on higher ground overlooking the coast. Rectangular in shape, the heiau had raised terraced platforms upon which were prayer towers, taboo houses and drum houses were constructed.
