Abstract

Lava trees in this image were created in 1790 when a rainforest was engulfed by a pahoehoe(smooth, ropy) lava flow from Kilauea's East Rift zone. As the swiflty-flowing molten lava moved through the forest some lava congealed around the moisture-laden native ohia lehua (Metrosideros polymorpha) tree trunks, while the rest of the flow moved on. The trees inside burned away leaving hollow "tree statues".
