Abstract

Christchurch Priory is an ecclesiastical parish and former priory church in Christchurch in the English county of Dorset (formerly in Hampshire). It is one of the longest parish churches in the country and is larger than 21 English Anglican Cathedrals. (Wikipedia) This hand coloured lantern slide was taken from the "southside". The orientation of churches is as follows....the Altar end is "east" . The left hand side looking towards the Altar is "north ". The right hand side is " south " and the front door is "west " Modern churches still use this terminology no matter how they are oriented. In the case of old English churches the ecclesiastical orientation coincided with the geographical one
