Abstract

Early view of the first permanent Victoria Bridge pylons under construction. The bridge stood until 1893, when it was washed away by flood. Begun in 1864, the first permanent bridge was not completed until 1874, mainly owing to financial difficulties. A temporary wooden bridge was opened for traffic in 1865, but partly collapsed on 16 November 1867. By 1869, most of the temporary structure had fallen into the river.
