Abstract

Dryland salinity is a major problem affecting the agricultural lands, particularly the wheat belt, of south-western Western Australia. Dryland salinity is caused clearing native vegetation on shallow watertables which bring salts to the surface and render the soil unusable. This image shows severely degraded salt-affected land and dead trees east of Perth, with viable land in the background.
