Abstract

Captain James Cook Memorial (HM Bark Endeavour Cairn), is located on the Foreshore, Cooktown Harbour, North Queensland. This memorial is a large granite rock on the foreshore which marks the place where the HMS Endeavour was beached and repaired after being on the Great Barrier Reef. The cairn was erected in 1926. The plaque on the Cairn reads: THIS CAIRN MARKS THE SPOT WHERE CAPTAIN JAMES COOK BEACHED HIS BARQUE H.M.S. ENDEAVOUR ON THE 18TH OF JUNE, IN THE YEAR 1770.
