The higher education environment is complex and subject to ongoing change.

We cannot predict with certainty the detail of events in the future, but we can anticipate some elements of changes to come, and we can prepare ourselves to be best positioned to take advantage of opportunities.

We know that South-East Queensland will experience strong demographic growth in coming years, notably in the age group which will lead to school-leaver demand for higher education. We know that the professions will continue to require new knowledge and professionals will require regular updating of skills. We know that research will be separately funded from teaching, that both teaching and research will be increasingly competitive, and that there will be ever higher expectations for universities to demonstrate the quality, relevance and value of what they do.

QUT is well placed to continue its successful development under foreseeable conditions ahead, but it is essential that we prepare for the future by:

regenerating, and in some cases reinterpreting, those characteristics that define and distinguish us;

engaging with our communities and building capacity to take advantage of new opportunities and to sustain quality;

setting ambitious goals and working towards them, and experimenting with new ways and a approaches to our work.
