Abstract

This cottage no longer exists. It was on the corner of Bowen Terrace and Bowen Street, New Farm, Brisbane, Queensland.

238 Bowen Terrace In November 1876 there is an advertisement (The Brisbane Courier, 18 Nov 1876, p.8) for the sale of a large house on the corner of Bowen Terrace and Bowen Street. It described four large rooms downstairs and three upstairs, but it also states rooms could be added underneath, and that the foundations were brick. So probably not 238 Bowen Terrace. Given the style of the building in the photograph, the house was probably built sometime around the turn of the century. The earliest occurrence of the address in Trove is an advertisement for Dressmakers (The Telegraph, 7 Jun 1910, p. 10.) Possibly Miss Kitrick, who moved to Toowoomba about that time.

The next reference is a Family Notice for the death of Leila Eveline Minnie Gibson (The Brisbane Courier, 11 Feb 1911, p. 4.)

Later that year, a property that could be the house is advertised for sale, (The Brisbane Courier, 8 Jul 1911, p. 8.)

The house was connected to sewerage in 1926, and further Family Notices appear for the Turton Family in 1939, 1940 and 1946
