One of Brisbane’s most prestigious heritage listed buildings, Brisbane City Hall was built between 1920 and 1930, situated in the heart of the CBD. At its time, it was ranked the second largest construction, behind the Sydney Harbour Bridge and cost approx. 980,000 pounds.

There are many features including: Main Auditorium and Father Henry Willis Organ, Word War II Signature Wall and clock tower.

In 1930 a magnificent building with a tower reaching 92 metres high was officially opened. It was designed by the architects Hall and Prentice and built of sandstone. It stood on foundations of huge hardwood logs from the Redlands District driven deep into the bed of the old swamp.

Sardonically labelled "the million-pound white elephant" by its detractors of the time, the new City Hall was a magnificent building in every way. Among its features were a huge circular concert hall, a colonnade of massive Corinthian columns facing the Civic Square and a great sculptural group almost 17 metres long by the sculptor Daphne Mayo decorating the facade. It was one of the most beautiful and impressive buildings in Australia at the time of construction, and remains so today although the erection of taller buildings in the vicinity has removed its domination of the city skyline it held when it was first built.
