Abstract

Jack Evans was a former cane cutter, lifesaver, shopkeeper, fisherman, honorary beach inspector, shark catcher, porpoise trainer, swimming instructor, fundraiser and aquarium owner. Jack Evans built the Snapper Rocks Sea Baths in 1956. Jack incorporated a shark pool for public viewing. This was such a popular attraction that later the same year Jack obtained two bottle nosed dolphins and the famous Jack Evans Porpoise Show began. Big seas often washed the sharks into the swimming pool. Therefore, Jack moved the porpoise pool aquarium to the mouth of the Tweed River in 1961. Jack eventually sold the porpoise pool to Keith Williams in 1976. The Tweed Shire Council named The Jack Evans Boat Harbour in his honour because of his involvement with a rescue in of a family of four in January 1963
