Abstract

Singapore River, the redeveloped Boat Quay River Terraces and a tourist bumboat. On the south bank of the Singapore River, this was the commercial centre of Singapore in the 1860s. Shophouses here were once occupied by wholesalers as offices and godown (storehouse for goods at a dockside). Bumboats or lighters were used to transport cargo between ships in the harbour and the quay. Today bumboats are popular with tourists and the most of the shophouses have been converted into pubs and restaurants.
