Abstract

Jack and Isabel Bain from Brisbane, Queensland, Australia did an around-the-world post retirement trip in 1966. These photographs show the Arlberg Pass, and Jack and Isabel's campervan in Austria in June 1966.

Arlberg Pass is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 1.793m (5,883ft) above the sea level, located between Vorarlberg and Tyrol in Austria.

The road over the pass is asphalted. It’s called Federal Highway B 197. The pass is the main connection between Lake of Constance in Vorarlberg and Innsbruck in Tyrol. The condition of the Arlberg road is excellent. Since this road had to carry all the West to East traffic in the past, before the tunnels were opened, it is a wide road with moderate curves and just fun to ride. The pass was bypassed by the Arlberg Road Tunnel in 1978.
