Abstract

Over the years the Rock Arch at the end of Jetty Road has also been a major attraction. Although some of the road is in disrepair, this is still an excellent example of the Island's giant granite boulders.

The sign on the back of the vehicle says "Arcadia Guest House". The Arcadia Guest House run by the Hayles family dates back to the late 1920s. In 1919 Robert Hayles and his children bought 83 acres. The Arcadia Boarding Establishment, consisting of a bungalow and rooms, was advertised in the Townsville Daily Bulletin, 17 November 1927. By 1931 it was known as the Arcadia Guest House. It was a single-story house with a thatched roof dining area and detached huts, known as the honeymoon huts. When one of the huts was relocated in 2014, a WW2 soldiers dog tag was found. The huts were named after famous WW2 battles. The Rock Arch is at the end of Armand Way, near the site of the old jetty on Geoffrey Bay.
