Abstract
In 1899 Robert Hayles purchased land at Picnic Bay and established Magnetic Island’s first hotel there. He built a jetty in Picnic Bay and ran a passenger ferry service between Townsville and Magnetic Island in competition with the Butlers. Hayles' first ferry Bee was wrecked in a storm in 1901 so in 1902 he purchased the smaller launch Phoenix.
