Abstract

Lennon’s Hotel at Broadbeach was constructed in 1957 on Queensland’s Gold Coast. Designed by architect Karl Langer, the hotel sat within its own (predominantly outdoor) playground, which included bars and beer garden, pool, tennis courts, dance floor and bandstand, and the large ‘mushroom’ shower. This hotel, one of 3, which Langer designed for Lennon’s in Queensland, set new standards for hotel design and epitomised the growing sophistication of the Gold Coast tourist market. It introduced the forms of both Le Corbusier and Oscar Niemeyer in a well controlled and climatically modulated way. (Significant Queensland 20th century architecture: a report, Robert Riddel, April 2005)

The hotel was demolished in 1987 to make way for a 31-storey international hotel tower block, a mall, tavern, and shopping complex that was linked to Jupiter’s Casino by a monorail.
