Abstract

The building to the left in this image with 1889 on the top was the Queensland Deposit Bank And Building Society, Adelaide Street, Brisbane. This branch was built in 1889 and designed by Messrs, Hunter and Corrie. The company continued trading until the early 1930s when it merged with Brisbane Permanent Benefit Building and Investment Society. The newly merged company in 1942 received a bank trading license, but it wasn’t until 1970 that the bank changed its name to Bank Of Queensland and has traded under that name ever since. As for the building pictured, it was demolished sometime between 1967 and 1968 for the construction of the office building that currently occupies the site, which happens to be Commonwealth Bank. Before the buildings demolition it was also occupied by Commonwealth Bank.
