Abstract

This booklet contains different photographs of Brisbane, Queensland, ca. 1927

BRISBANE—A CITY OF SUNSHINE AND BEAUTY. The Right Worshipful The Mayor of Brisbane, Ald. W. A. Jolly. BRISBANE, the Capital City of the State of Queensland, and the seat of Government, has a population of 253,000, and is picturesquely situated on the banks of a beautiful and noble river of the same name. It is less than 20 miles from the mouth of the river, and is surrounded by a magnificent range of tree-clad hills. Regarded from an industrial and commercial standpoint, the Metropolis is the centre of much progress and prosperity, and the expansion made of recent years has been remarkable. That Brisbane is destined to figure prominently in the shipping world in the near future is exemplified by the extensive wharfage accommodation that has been, and is being, provided for the berthage of oversea ships. When the Hamilton Basin project is given effect to Brisbane will be in a position to lay claim to having an almost unbroken stretch of wharves from Pinkenba to Victoria Bridge. The length of the Brisbane River, from its source to its entry into Moreton Bay, is 210 miles. The depth of the river being 30 feet at high tide, vessels drawing up to 29 feet have berthed at the City Wharves with the utmost safety. The new City Hall and Municipal Offices now being erected will be the finest building in the Commonwealth. It covers a ground area of over 2 acres, and it will cost £750,000. The height of the tower is 320 feet; the seating accommodation of the Concert Hall 3,500. Brisbane has recently entered upon a new form of Civic Government. Under the Greater Brisbane Scheme, the 19 Local Authorities, which previously controlled an area of some 385 sq. miles, have been absorbed into one body. The new Council consists of a Mayor and 20 Aldermen, and when fully established will, in addition to the ordinary work of Civic Government, control the Tramways, Water and Sewerage Board, Electric Light, Cemeteries, and Fire Brigade. (Signed) W.A. Jolly Mayor of Brisbane
