Abstract

Queensland's first Government House is located at Gardens Point in the grounds of the Queensland University of Technology at the end of George Street in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. The building's construction was the first important architectural work undertaken by the newly formed Government of Queensland. It is listed on the Queensland Heritage Register (Wikipedia)

At the time of this photo it was the first location of the University of Queensland as per the text under the photo " Government House, Brisbane, first occupied by Governor Bowen in 1862 and dedicated to the University of Queensland 10th December 1909"

Old Government House (Lower George Street)

Like the Parliament House building, the original Government House in Brisbane was designed by the Colonial Architect Charles Tiffin and built by Joshua Jeays. The double-storeyed building has the front and two side walls constructed from freestone from the same quarry which provided the stone for Parliament House. The rear wall, on the river side, is of Brisbane porphyry.

Construction began in 1860 and the first Governor Sir George Hobbs moved into his new home in April 1862.

Many additions were made at various times in later periods to the building that was to house eight Governors until in 1910 Sir William MacGregor moved into Fernberg, the new official residence. The old building became headquarters of the newly established University of Queensland at an impressive ceremony.

When the University moved to the Saint Lucia site after the second World War the building was utilised for a number of purposes, mainly by the Queensland Institute of Technology and later by the National Trust and now Queensland University of Technology.
